Symptoms Of Diabetes: A Reason To Think About

March 11th, 2010

Diabetes mellitusrefers to a medical condition in which a person’s glucose metabolism becomes adversely affected leading to higher levels of glucose in the bloodstream and this condition is then referred to as hyperglycemia. The level of glucose in urine go high in diabetic condition. The reason why glucose levels rise is that the body is not able to secrete sufficient quantities of insulin on account of several factors including malfunctioning insulin.

Feeling Hungry, Eating More Increase Diabetes Mellitus

Once the glucose metabolism goes out of whack the body starts sending messages to the brain that help in making a person feel hungry and this in turn leads to overeating. What results is further increase in level of glucose in the body and when this increase takes place it will give rise to appearance of toxic products known as ketones. If not taken care, ketones arises to the condition of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Therefore, in order to effectively treat diabetes mellitus doctors will need to bring down the level of glucose and also ensure that the patient is protected against the consequences of diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, diabetes mellitus is classified as Type 1, Type 2 as well as gestational diabetes with the latter being a condition that only affects pregnant mothers.

Type 1 diabetesgenerally onsets in childhood and is also referred to as diabetes mellitus that is insulin-dependent. When the cells are destroyed then pancreas fails to produce insulin due to which this condition occurs. The treatment therefore involves getting insulin injections – permanently.

Type 2 diabetes is of course non-insulin dependent and this form of diabetes mellitus occurs, in most cases, during a person’s adult life and it involves trouble because of insufficient production of insulin. It is also the most common of the three different forms of diabetes mellitus and medical experts also believe that today, for every person that is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes there is one more person with the same condition but whose condition has not as yet been diagnosed.

In a few cases, diabetes mellitus can be caused on account of abuse of certain kinds of drugs and also because of other health conditions. It pays to understand what causes insulin dependent diabetes mellitus as only then can an effective treatment be prescribed. In any case, conventional thinking in regard to possible causes of this kind of diabetes seems to suggest that the beta cells that produce insulin will have auto destructed thereby leading to non-production of insulin.

There Is No Need To Worry About Gestational Diabetes

March 8th, 2010

Gestational diabetes mellitus is a form of diabetes mellitus that occurs during the pregnancy period and in fact it is often only a temporary condition. Not every pregnant woman will develop this problem though it is a condition that affects pregnant women that have high levels of blood sugar. In fact, only about four percent of pregnancies become gestational diabetes mellitus conditions though it is still a major health concern during pregnancy.

Exact Causes Of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

The exact causes of gestational diabetes mellitus are yet to be determined though several factors can contribute to the problem. Among other things, obese women, those with family history of diabetes and also women over the age of thirty will be liable to develop gestational diabetes mellitus as too will women that have previously been diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus in an earlier pregnancy. Even when a woman has previously delivered an especially large baby such as a nine pound baby; they can become prone to developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

It pays to understand what risks a pregnant mother will need to worry on account of having developed gestational diabetes mellitus. The fact is that elevated levels of glucose in the blood is neither good for the pregnant mother nor for her unborn baby and in fact, this disease actually puts both at greater risk of becoming diabetics – permanently. In fact, it has been established that babies that are born from mothers having experienced gestational diabetes mellitus will be more prone to becoming diabetics later on in their lives as compared with babies whose mothers did not have a diabetes problem during their pregnancies.

It is very good that gestational diabetes can be cured. One should take proper care of gestational diabetes at its early stage because it may be harmful for both, mother and her baby Taking correct diet with regular exercise lessens the symptoms of this disease. Consulting a doctor is of course one of the best things that a pregnant mother can do though at the same time there is no need to panic when you learn that you have developed gestational diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 diabetes is not general type of diabetes as its mellitus are completely different as compared to type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, people that are in their mid forties will need to get them checked to see whether or not this form of diabetes has developed.

Consider That Gingivitis is Just the Beginning Stage of Problems and Can Be Corrected…

March 8th, 2010

The state of our own personal dental health is something that many people just do not have time to think about and that is certainly understandable. On the surface, it does indeed seem that there are more important things to concentrate on. Saving disaster victims, ending world famine, and stopping human rights violations like the persecution of the peaceful Falun Gong meditators in China are all very worthy and important ways to spend our time.

I know that there is not anything glamorous about taking care of our teeth and gums. Yet, it is truly vitally important to each of us as individuals. Does it get in the way? You bet it does. However, we all need to take the time to focus on this truly necessary aspect of our lives because saving our own teeth and health has very high intrinsic value.

Let’s not even talk about the heavy and perhaps unreasonable expense of costly dental treatments. Instead, let us focus on something a little more practical sounding. Researchers are finding connections between gum disease otherwise known as periodontal disease and all kinds of illnesses.

Recently, I heard the claim that there is a connection between dental disease and pancreatic cancer! The link between diabetes, heart disease, stroke, pre-term babies as well as other illnesses have all been at least suspected of being related in some way to gum disease.

"But I do not have gum disease !", you may protest. Actually, the odds are not in your favor that you do not have it. In fact, dental professionals will tell you that perhaps as many as 75% of the American population has some form of this problem. That is more people than do not have it.

Typically, this problem progresses in an almost invisible way to the victim. Your dentist or hygienist may mention to you on several occasions that you are starting to have a problem. Like most people, you may not pay much attention. After all, everything seems fine!

One day you may be informed that you need a deep cleaning or a SRP (Scaling and Root Planing Treatment) and that you have a moderate level of gum disease. You think you went from zero to sixty in a few seconds, but the reality is that you had a gingivitis problem a while back, but now it has increased in severity.

To be fair, it may not have happened this way to you. Dentists are not always focused on the health of your gums, preferring to simply work on your teeth. Therefore, it is possible that the problem grew and you knew nothing about it!

For this reason, a good periodontist can be your friend. This is the focus of their practice. They can always refer you to a good general dentist if they see a problem with your teeth. This is what I prefer. I go to a periodontist and use him as my primary care dentist even if he doesn’t know it!

Anyway, the point is that gum disease is rather serious, you cannot afford (literally) to bury your head in the sand. You could end up spending thousands upon thousands for treatments and a final solution that is nowhere near as good as your own original teeth.

The good news is that what you do at home is far more important than what your dentist and hygienist do for you in the office. They cannot be with you every day and you may only see them for a couple to a few times per year. You can ask them yourself. They will tell you that YOU and what you do at home will have the greatest impact on your dental health.
