The Best Diet For Diabetics

Diabetes is a disease that is marked by higher than normal levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood stream. This is caused by many different things : your body’s resistance to insulin, or a pancreas that doesn’t generate the proper amount of insulin for you to function properly. Insulin is a hormone that the body uses to convert glucose into energy. No matter how your diabetes is caused, you have to be able to control your blood sugar levels in order to keep yourself from falling into a diabetic coma. The proper diet for diabetics has been a subject of some contention in the past.

For many years, it was thought that people suffering from diabetes should avoid sugar and other carbohydrates at all costs. Because sugar is very easily and quickly turned into glucose in the bloodstream, it was usually thought to be the more harmful thing for the body. Diabetic diets incorporated a variety of artificial sweeteners instead of actual sugar to cope with this problem.

Today, doctors accept the fact that diabetics are going to be exposed to sugar and other carbohydrates no matter how carefully they try to avoid them. While some artificial sweeteners do not contain calories or carbs, they’re still not completely safe in a diet for diabetics for other reasons.

Bottom line, the best diet for diabetics is identical to the best diet for people who are not diabetics. Diabetics can continue to enjoy all of the foods that they love. The difference is, it is essential that diabetics take the time to monitor their daily carbohydrate intake, and limit it if necessary. You have to look out for potatoes and pasta as much as sugary, sweet foods, as carbohydrates have sugars and starches in them as well.

The ideal diet for a diabetic would include more fresh fruits and vegetables. Vegetables and fruits do contain natural sugars, though these differ from glucose. Because of this, they don’t affect the sugar levels in the bloodstream. Fruits and vegetables also contain more fiber, which have the effect of improving bowel movements and making one feel more full, thus curbing one’s appetite.

It used to be said that diabetic meals should be prepared separately from non-diabetic meals; this is not true and has been debunked. The fact is that the best diabetic diet is the same as the diet the rest of the family should follow.  All you really need are plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as protein and starch, and a limited amount of fatty food.
